Add to EdgeFluxFlow: Conservative Flow-Matching for Astronomical Image Super-Resolution

Ground-to-space astronomical super-resolution requires recovering space-quality images from ground-based observations that are simultaneously limited by pixel sampling resolution and atmospheric seeing, which imposes a stochastic, spatially varying PSF that cannot be resolved through upsampling alone. Existing methods rely on synthetic training pairs that fail to capture real atmospheric statistics and are prone to either over-smoothed reconstructions or hallucination sources with no physical counterpart in the observed sky. We propose FluxFlow, a conservative pixel-space flow-matching framework that incorporates observation uncertainty and source-region importance weights during training, and a training-free Wiener-regularized test-time correction to suppress hallucination sources while preserving recovered detail. We further construct the DESI--HST Dataset, the large-scale real-world benchmark comprising 19,500 real co-registered ground-to-space image pairs with real atmospheric PSF variation. Experiments demonstrate that FluxFlow consistently outperforms existing baseline methods in both photometric and scientific accuracy.
REVEAL: Multimodal Vision-Language Alignment of Retinal Morphometry and Clinical Risks for Incident AD and Dementia Prediction
Apr 20, 2026The retina provides a unique, noninvasive window into Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia, capturing early structural changes through morphometric features, while systemic and lifestyle risk factors reflect well-established contributors to disease susceptibility long before clinical symptom onset. However, current retinal analysis frameworks typically model imaging and risk factors separately, limiting their ability to capture joint multimodal patterns critical for early risk prediction. Moreover, existing methods rarely incorporate mechanisms to organize or align patients with similar retinal and clinical characteristics, constraining the learning of coherent cross-modal associations. To address these limitations, we introduce REVEAL (REtinal-risk Vision-Language Early Alzheimer's Learning), a framework that aligns color fundus photographs with individualized disease-specific risk profiles for predicting incident AD and dementia, on average 8 years before diagnosis (range: 1-11 years). Because real-world risk factors are structured questionnaire data, we translate them into clinically interpretable narratives compatible with pretrained vision-language models (VLMs). We further propose a group-aware contrastive learning (GACL) strategy that clusters patients with similar retinal morphometry and risk factors as positive pairs, strengthening multimodal alignment. This unified representation learning framework substantially outperforms state-of-the-art retinal imaging models paired with clinical text encoders, as well as general-purpose VLMs, demonstrating the value of jointly modeling retinal biomarkers and clinical risk factors. By providing a generalizable and noninvasive approach for early AD and dementia risk stratification, REVEAL has the potential to enable earlier intervention and improve preventive care at the population level.
From edges to meaning: Semantic line sketches as a cognitive scaffold for ancient pictograph invention
Apr 14, 2026Humans readily recognize objects from sparse line drawings, a capacity that appears early in development and persists across cultures, suggesting neural rather than purely learned origins. Yet the computational mechanism by which the brain transforms high-level semantic knowledge into low-level visual symbols remains poorly understood. Here we propose that ancient pictographic writing emerged from the brain's intrinsic tendency to compress visual input into stable, boundary-based abstractions. We construct a biologically inspired digital twin of the visual hierarchy that encodes an image into low-level features, generates a contour sketch, and iteratively refines it through top-down feedback guided by semantic representations, mirroring the feedforward and recurrent architecture of the human visual cortex. The resulting symbols bear striking structural resemblance to early pictographs across culturally distant writing systems, including Egyptian hieroglyphs, Chinese oracle bone characters, and proto-cuneiform, and offer candidate interpretations for undeciphered scripts. Our findings support a neuro-computational origin of pictographic writing and establish a framework in which AI can recapitulate the cognitive processes by which humans first externalized perception into symbols.
NTIRE 2026 3D Restoration and Reconstruction in Real-world Adverse Conditions: RealX3D Challenge Results
Apr 05, 2026This paper presents a comprehensive review of the NTIRE 2026 3D Restoration and Reconstruction (3DRR) Challenge, detailing the proposed methods and results. The challenge seeks to identify robust reconstruction pipelines that are robust under real-world adverse conditions, specifically extreme low-light and smoke-degraded environments, as captured by our RealX3D benchmark. A total of 279 participants registered for the competition, of whom 33 teams submitted valid results. We thoroughly evaluate the submitted approaches against state-of-the-art baselines, revealing significant progress in 3D reconstruction under adverse conditions. Our analysis highlights shared design principles among top-performing methods and provides insights into effective strategies for handling 3D scene degradation.
SGI: Structured 2D Gaussians for Efficient and Compact Large Image Representation
Mar 10, 20262D Gaussian Splatting has emerged as a novel image representation technique that can support efficient rendering on low-end devices. However, scaling to high-resolution images requires optimizing and storing millions of unstructured Gaussian primitives independently, leading to slow convergence and redundant parameters. To address this, we propose Structured Gaussian Image (SGI), a compact and efficient framework for representing high-resolution images. SGI decomposes a complex image into multi-scale local spaces defined by a set of seeds. Each seed corresponds to a spatially coherent region and, together with lightweight multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), generates structured implicit 2D neural Gaussians. This seed-based formulation imposes structural regularity on otherwise unstructured Gaussian primitives, which facilitates entropy-based compression at the seed level to reduce the total storage. However, optimizing seed parameters directly on high-resolution images is a challenging and non-trivial task. Therefore, we designed a multi-scale fitting strategy that refines the seed representation in a coarse-to-fine manner, substantially accelerating convergence. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that SGI achieves up to 7.5x compression over prior non-quantized 2D Gaussian methods and 1.6x over quantized ones, while also delivering 1.6x and 6.5x faster optimization, respectively, without degrading, and often improving, image fidelity. Fourier Angle Alignment for Oriented Object Detection in Remote Sensing
Feb 27, 2026In remote sensing rotated object detection, mainstream methods suffer from two bottlenecks, directional incoherence at detector neck and task conflict at detecting head. Ulitising fourier rotation equivariance, we introduce Fourier Angle Alignment, which analyses angle information through frequency spectrum and aligns the main direction to a certain orientation. Then we propose two plug and play modules : FAAFusion and FAA Head. FAAFusion works at the detector neck, aligning the main direction of higher-level features to the lower-level features and then fusing them. FAA Head serves as a new detection head, which pre-aligns RoI features to a canonical angle and adds them to the original features before classification and regression. Experiments on DOTA-v1.0, DOTA-v1.5 and HRSC2016 show that our method can greatly improve previous work. Particularly, our method achieves new state-of-the-art results of 78.72% mAP on DOTA-v1.0 and 72.28% mAP on DOTA-v1.5 datasets with single scale training and testing, validating the efficacy of our approach in remote sensing object detection. Denoising the Deep Sky: Physics-Based CCD Noise Formation for Astronomical Imaging
Jan 30, 2026Astronomical imaging remains noise-limited under practical observing constraints, while standard calibration pipelines mainly remove structured artifacts and leave stochastic noise largely unresolved. Learning-based denoising is promising, yet progress is hindered by scarce paired training data and the need for physically interpretable and reproducible models in scientific workflows. We propose a physics-based noise synthesis framework tailored to CCD noise formation. The pipeline models photon shot noise, photo-response non-uniformity, dark-current noise, readout effects, and localized outliers arising from cosmic-ray hits and hot pixels. To obtain low-noise inputs for synthesis, we average multiple unregistered exposures to produce high-SNR bases. Realistic noisy counterparts synthesized from these bases using our noise model enable the construction of abundant paired datasets for supervised learning. We further introduce a real-world dataset across multi-bands acquired with two twin ground-based telescopes, providing paired raw frames and instrument-pipeline calibrated frames, together with calibration data and stacked high-SNR bases for real-world evaluation.
Large-scale EM Benchmark for Multi-Organelle Instance Segmentation in the Wild
Jan 18, 2026Accurate instance-level segmentation of organelles in electron microscopy (EM) is critical for quantitative analysis of subcellular morphology and inter-organelle interactions. However, current benchmarks, based on small, curated datasets, fail to capture the inherent heterogeneity and large spatial context of in-the-wild EM data, imposing fundamental limitations on current patch-based methods. To address these limitations, we developed a large-scale, multi-source benchmark for multi-organelle instance segmentation, comprising over 100,000 2D EM images across variety cell types and five organelle classes that capture real-world variability. Dataset annotations were generated by our designed connectivity-aware Label Propagation Algorithm (3D LPA) with expert refinement. We further benchmarked several state-of-the-art models, including U-Net, SAM variants, and Mask2Former. Our results show several limitations: current models struggle to generalize across heterogeneous EM data and perform poorly on organelles with global, distributed morphologies (e.g., Endoplasmic Reticulum). These findings underscore the fundamental mismatch between local-context models and the challenge of modeling long-range structural continuity in the presence of real-world variability. The benchmark dataset and labeling tool will be publicly released soon.
RFAssigner: A Generic Label Assignment Strategy for Dense Object Detection
Jan 03, 2026Label assignment is a critical component in training dense object detectors. State-of-the-art methods typically assign each training sample a positive and a negative weight, optimizing the assignment scheme during training. However, these strategies often assign an insufficient number of positive samples to small objects, leading to a scale imbalance during training. To address this limitation, we introduce RFAssigner, a novel assignment strategy designed to enhance the multi-scale learning capabilities of dense detectors. RFAssigner first establishes an initial set of positive samples using a point-based prior. It then leverages a Gaussian Receptive Field (GRF) distance to measure the similarity between the GRFs of unassigned candidate locations and the ground-truth objects. Based on this metric, RFAssigner adaptively selects supplementary positive samples from the unassigned pool, promoting a more balanced learning process across object scales. Comprehensive experiments on three datasets with distinct object scale distributions validate the effectiveness and generalizability of our method. Notably, a single FCOS-ResNet-50 detector equipped with RFAssigner achieves state-of-the-art performance across all object scales, consistently outperforming existing strategies without requiring auxiliary modules or heuristics.
RealX3D: A Physically-Degraded 3D Benchmark for Multi-view Visual Restoration and Reconstruction
Dec 29, 2025We introduce RealX3D, a real-capture benchmark for multi-view visual restoration and 3D reconstruction under diverse physical degradations. RealX3D groups corruptions into four families, including illumination, scattering, occlusion, and blurring, and captures each at multiple severity levels using a unified acquisition protocol that yields pixel-aligned LQ/GT views. Each scene includes high-resolution capture, RAW images, and dense laser scans, from which we derive world-scale meshes and metric depth. Benchmarking a broad range of optimization-based and feed-forward methods shows substantial degradation in reconstruction quality under physical corruptions, underscoring the fragility of current multi-view pipelines in real-world challenging environments.
